unlike the majority of the republican candidates, the front running democrats (Clinton, Obama, Edwards) all have had experience in washington. Romney was govener, but in a smaller scale giv't in massachusetts. The same can be said for Huckabee (Arkansas) and Giuliani (NYC) but not McCain.
